Bewsey Old Hall, Warrington

Bewsey Old Hall is a Grade II* Listed building that has just been removed from English Heritage’s ‘Buildings at Risk’ register, following extensive rebuilding and preservation works undertaken by Next Big Thing.

Derelict for over 25 years, the building now houses five generously planned apartments and two houses which are fully occupied following sales to owner-occupiers and investors.

The largely Jacobean building is of three storey construction with distinctive chimneys and stone mullion windows. In September 2011 a fire badly damaged the entire west wing of the property destroying all floors and the roof, leaving the remaining shell in a dangerous condition.

The first phase of works consisted of stabilisation of the building, working closely with English Heritage to ensure a suitable engineering solution. The roof was rebuilt using reclaimed slate and traditional lead flashings with all elevations repointed and carefully cleaned using specialist restoration techniques. Stone masons hand crafted the items that needed replacing and re-bedded and cleaned stone lintels, sills and finials. Damaged rainwater goods were replaced with cast iron elements and new services were hidden inside the building to avoid any alterations to its appearance. Deep reveal glazing systems were used on the old hall’s stone windows, adding depth to these prominent architectural details.

Bewsey Old Hall’s interiors are rich in Jacobean detail. Enormous beams, trusses and handmade brick walls were carefully cleaned and restored after specifically Listed wattle and daub walls were encased and protected. In contrast to the fabric of the Listed building, all kitchens, bathrooms and finishes are both modern and minimalist in design.
